I'm sitting on the couch at around noon being bored off my ass, thinking, "so this is what I'm going to do until the Super Bowl?"
Then my roommate walks in and throws down a couple of SkyBox tickets for the 17th Hole at the FBR Open. Random dumb luck landed him the tickets.
Anyways, this thing was pretty cool. We didn't stay in our SkyBox for too long, though, because we wanted to mingle around the course. But just the fact they had free food and drinks inside there meant we had to bless it with some of our time.
On Saturday there was some 140,000 people in attendance. On Super Sunday there was "only" half of that, 75,000. It was kinda crazy. I never thought a golf tournament could be such a grand social event. Everyone out there was really cool with each other even. No random assholes, and all kinds of good looking girls. There was more attractive females at this event than any other sporting even I have ever attended combined. As a matter of fact, a good chunk of the people there were 20-something.
Michelob Ultras were $5 bucks, and they kept 'em coming fast and furious. You could find other beers for $6 bucks, but the Michelob stands were more accessible. At other sporting events they try and stop selling them at a certain point. Here, they announced on Friday before the weekend draw, that beer sales would continue until golf was done being played, or they ran out. You walk up, guy says, "How many you need?"
We finally found Mr. Hometown hero Phil Mickelson at the tee on the 15th hole. At the time we thought he was on the 14th, then I look up and see a lefty taking some warm up swings, "HEY its Phil!" So, we finally found him. We get a great view about 20 feet down from the tee looking back up. All tourney Phil was mostly dominating. We're expecting a perfect tee shot down the middle. This is the best golfer either of us have laid eyes on in person, it'll HAVE to be perfect. What happens? He slices left and it trickles into the water a couple hundred yards out. Could you believe it? Probably the only time he hits it in the water the entire tournament was when we start watching.
It was so funny walking down the cart path alongside Mickelson. My roommate goes, "look at him, Lefty walks with a purpose." I just laugh, "No dude, he just walks like everyone is watching him." Sure enough the gallery following him was a couple thousand deep. I'd walk oddly too if everyone was staring at me.
Anyways, the whole ordeal was pretty cool. Phil Mickelson is idolized out here in Phoenix since he went to ASU, so it was neat being a gawking bystander thinking how cool it is to be walking next to him.
My roommate and I already can't wait for next year's FBR! Golf events are officially "cool" in my book.
